Kanie serves as a committee member of the Central Environmental Council of Japan and a member of the Environmental Council of Nakano Ward in Tokyo, Japan. Before joining Tokyo Tech, he was an associate professor at the Faculty of Law and Policy Studies, the University of Kitakyushu, Japan.

His research and areas of expertise include Earth System Governance, global environmental politics, and multilateral diplomacy with a particular focus on climate change.
