Will Steffen is a climate science expert and researcher and the Executive Director of the Climate Change Institute at the Australian National University, Canberra.
Professor Steffen has a long history in international global change research, serving from 1998 to 2004 as Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), based in Stockholm, Sweden, and before that as Executive Officer of IGBP’s Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems project. Prior to taking up the CCI Directorship in 2008, Professor Steffen was the inaugural director of the ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society. Since 2004 he has served as science adviser to the Australian Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. He is also on the panel of experts supporting the Prime Minister’s Multi-Party Climate Change Committee and a Commissioner in the independent Climate Commission.
His research interests span a broad range within the fields of climate change and Earth System science, with an emphasis on sustainability, climate change and the Earth System. He is the author of numerous publications on climate science.
